Frequently Asked Questions

How much bacon will I receive each month?
Depending on the option you select, you will receive either one or two packages of premium artisan bacon each month. Packages tend to vary in weight because it's pretty difficult to standardize the size and shape of bacon, but each package you receive will weigh between 12 and 16 ounces.

What's the difference between artisan bacon and regular store-bought bacon?
Artisan bacon is cured and smoked in small batches by producers who are far more focused on the quality of their product than on the quantity they can produce. Almost all bacon you can buy at the supermarket is processed in massive quantities, which means the processors worry more about producing large amounts of bacon quickly. That's all well and good, but it ignores what we believe to be the most important thing -- the taste. The bacon we sell is made in smaller batches by people who truly think about how the end product tastes. You can really tell the difference.

What's included in the welcome kit?
The welcome kit we ship to all new club members includes information about the membership, some tasty bacon-related treats, a Bacon Club coffee mug, discounts on future orders with The Pig Next Door, and other assorted goodies that will please the bacon lover in your life.

Can I include a gift card and a personalized message with my order?
Yes. We will include a gift card that includes your personalized message in your welcome kit free of charge.

How quickly will I receive the welcome kit?
The welcome kit is shipped via priority mail and usually arrives within four to five business days. If, like us, you're a last-minute shopper who needs it more quickly, an express option is available for faster service.

When will I receive my first bacon delivery?
Depending on the time of the month you placed your order, your first shipment of bacon will arrive in 2 to 4 weeks. You'll receive an email from us about a week before we send your first batch of bacon, just to make sure we have it going to the correct address.

How is the bacon shipped to me?
Each month, we pack our bacon in specially designed materials that will keep your shipment cool and fresh until it arrives at your door. All shipments are sent via expedited delivery, and we only ship our bacon on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays so it won't spend the weekend in some stuffy warehouse in the middle of nowhere. Do I need to sign up for a whole year's membership?
No. Half-year memberships are available in both The Pig's Traditional Bacon Club and The Pig's Heirloom Bacon Club.

What's the difference between your traditional bacon and your heirloom bacon?
The bacon we offer in both The Pig's Traditional Bacon Club and The Pig's Heirloom Bacon Club is made by artisan producers who are passionate about creating delicious, high-quality bacon. The heirloom bacon, though, is a bit different. It's made from pork from rarer breeds of pigs, so the flavor more closely resembles that of the pork with which our grandparents grew up. As one of our heirloom producers tells us, "Our pigs live in pastures but also wander through the woods, so their diet includes wild grasses and acorns. We produce happier pigs that roam freely and are allowed to act more like real pigs. You don't get that at a lot of conventional pig farms." Farms that operate like this not only treat their pigs more humanely, but they're more friendly to the environment. We love all the bacon we offer to members of both clubs, but heirloom pork is incredible stuff. Bacon made from heirloom pork will blow your mind.

Why is a membership in The Pig's Heirloom Bacon Club more expensive?
Because the pigs that produce the meat for our heirloom bacon are raised in a more specialized manner and in limited numbers by small farms, heirloom artisan bacon costs more to produce than traditional artisan bacon.

What's the best way to cook your bacon?
It seems like everyone has a favorite technique for cooking bacon. Our preferred method is to cook it on the stovetop in a frying pan set over low heat. This allows the fat to render slowly as the bacon begins to crisp nicely. Many people enjoy baking their bacon in the oven, and you can do this by cooking it in a 375-degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes, turning the slices over halfway through the cooking process. This is a great way to cook large quantities of bacon.

Can I cook bacon in the microwave?
Our bacon tends to be thicker and meatier than supermarket bacon and it has less water in it, so it doesn't always cook evenly in the microwave. We tend to avoid that option unless, you know, it's 2 a.m. and we really need to satisfy our bacon craving immediately. It happens. Don't judge us.

If I really like one of the bacons you send me, can I order more of it from you?
Yes, you can. With every shipment of bacon you receive, we will also include pricing and ordering information should you want to get your bacon-loving hands on more of it.
